Biomass Energy - Project Updates and Outlook

Sohum Gandhi, Director, Enriva Pty Ltd

Historically solar energy has been heavily represented at the All-Energy conference. However Biomass energy makes a large contribution to the Australian renewable energy mix. The 2013/14 Australian energy statistics puts biomass contribution at over 50% of the renewable primary energy consumption in the country. In many industrial applications biomass energy is the best solution both in terms of delivering the technical requirements and financial returns. As of late, uptake of industrial biomass projects could be better and biomass is often overlooked completely in discussions of renewable energy options. This presentation will take a look at recent project take ups, and the regions outlook for renewable biomass in industry.

Bio-Energy: A Solution to the Natural Gas Problem

Technology overview and applications for burning biomass to generate renewable base load electricity

Dr Robert White, Director, Technical Insight Pty Ltd

Internationally proven, commercially available technology is available to generate electric power from waste heat, which can also be considered low grade heat.

Many industrial processes continuously emit low grade heat into the environment and this type of technology can generate electricity around the clock.

The talk will introduce the technology and provide examples of where it is used around the world. The technology can convert heat from exhaust gases into electricity. It is currently widely used in marine engines and in large industrial furnaces, such as those used to manufacture glass. Biomass, such as waste timber diverted from land-fill and waste saw dust at saw mills, can be burnt in new technology combustors to generate renewable base-load electricity.
