A look at solar developments today and the potential for tomorrow

Dr Zhengrong Shi, world-renowned solar scientist, Fellow of Australia Academy of Technological Science and Engineering and adjunct professor at the University of NSW

This presentation will give an overview of the global solar market , how it compares with the Australian PV market and solar energy today.  It will look at the past 40 years, show its shortcomings and real cost. It will then look at how solar has the opportunity to turn buildings into renewable energy plants, the potential of this as a building product and real world performance.

Tips From Australia's Commercial Solar Leader on entering the commercial and industrial solar space

Danin Kahn, CEO, Todae Solar

The commercial and industrial solar industry is one of the largest growing markets within the solar sector. Taking advantage of this industry can be challenging or even daunting. Todae Solar will provide insights and advice on manoeuvring through the commercial solar market.

Commercial Solar – Solar Farms in the City

Warwick Batstone, System Solutions Manager, Canadian Solar

Until recently in Australia, if you say solar farm, people think ground mount systems with great complexities and of a size around 5 to 10 MW; but as we advance in technology and installations become more efficient, what’s to stop us utilizing large energy users roof to create a network of decentralised solar farms within city boundaries. Developing a set of practices from around the world that mean that the system installed not only meets Australian requirements but utilises theories and processes used the world over. Tried and tested solar farms on the roofs of integral city buildings helping to reduce network constraints and increase the strength of local Australian businesses.

New Opportunities? Development of large scale Solar PV in North Queensland: Sustainable Electricity for the State and Export Product for ASEAN Region

Ahmad Zahedi, Associate Professor, James Cook University

From electricity point of view, the Australia’s state of Queensland is part of the NEM (National Electricity Market) and its electricity grid is connected to the electricity network of other Southern and Eastern states of Australia (New South Wales, Victoria, and South Australia). A large amount of electricity delivered to North and Far North of Queensland state is produced in South and Central part of this state. So the electricity has to travel a long distance to reach the North Queensland.

The objective of this talk is to explore the possibility of using more local resources such as solar energy for electricity production in North Queensland. This talk present the results of a study conducted to estimate the potential benefits of using solar photovoltaic (PV) electricity in tropical region of North Queensland.

The encouraging results of this study suggest that the Australian Solar PV Industry can produce low-cost, reliable, and sustainable electricity for North Queensland and also this solar electricity has the potential to become an export product from Australia to the ASEAN countries electricity networks.
